모스플라이는 디자이너 시절 시작한 낙서는 현실 도피이자 유희였다. 이제는 낙서가 삶을 설명하는 가장 솔직한 언어가 되었다. 낙서에서 시작된 작업은 큰 메시지가 있다기보다는, 내가 어떻게 살아왔는지, 삶을 바라보는 태도를 보여주는 일에 가깝다. 억지로 멋내지 않은 감정, 유머, 그리고 조금은 이상한 상상들이 담긴 이야기를 그린다. 작업들이 대체로 유쾌하고 밝아 보여도 그 안엔 늘 피로와 냉소, 외로움이 드러난다. 너무 노골적으로 말하고 싶진 않았지만 그런 감정이 작업 속에서 장난감처럼 섞여 있길 바랐던 것 같다. 그런 감정들을 마주한 그림 속 인물들을 보면서 살아가며 마주하는 비극들에 대한 가장 큰 저항은 결국 유머와 웃음이 아닐까라는 생각으로 작업을 이어나간다.
Mothfly‘s doodles, begun during his days as a designer, were an escape from reality and a form of play. Now, they’ve become the most honest language for explaining my life. The works that grew from those doodles don’t hold grand messages; they’re closer to showing how I’ve lived and how I look at the world. I draw stories filled with unpolished emotions, humor, and slightly odd imaginations. Even when the works appear cheerful and bright, they always carry traces of fatigue, cynicism, and loneliness. I didn’t want to express those feelings too bluntly, but I hoped they would blend into the work like little toys—something to hold and gently dissolve. As I look at the characters who embody those emotions, I continue working with the belief that the greatest resistance to the tragedies we face in life is, after all, humor and laughter.
